Killing My Darlings

2016 #ROW80 Round 2: Check-In #14 | 10 Minute Novelist: Update 18

Every three months or so, I look at the list of projects I have for the year. I like to have a clear idea of what’s to come and separating my projects by trimesters works well for me. As I work with my book expansion, I realized that some books I had as part of the series might work better as stand-alone or perhaps a separate series. Therefore, I had to take the decision to kill my darlings.

Now, instead of five books, I’m only writing two as part of the Exhibits series. It makes sense since the MCs are related, and strong friendships connect them. I kept three of the other characters and canned the other three for later. This change opened my schedule, allowing me to work on other books I been looking forward too.

It might seem harsh, but in the end, the stories will be more detailed, and I should be able to add variety to my projects to come since I write different genres within the MM Erotic Romance umbrella. By the end of June, I’d be starting a new series that has been trying to cut in front of all my other books.

Now, I’m going back to play catch up with the rest of the things I want to finish before the end of May. Everything is moving forward at a good pace, and my boys are cooperating. I just have to make time for them.

  1. It is a hard choice to make, but sometimes, we do have to let some stories and characters go. But sounds like you are going to store them away somewhere just in case you need them.
Have a good week and get lots done before the end of the month.
