[Fridays with Favorites] Into Deep Waters by Kaje Harper

Well, it’s Friday once again and the topic for this post took me by surprise. I didn’t have an author scheduled for today, so that meant it was a favorites kind of day.

Into Deep WatersYesterday, I started listening to Into Deep Waters by Kaje Harper and was about eighty percent done by the time I went to bed. I always keep a rating in my head of the books I’m reading. It helps me deciding the final one when it’s time to write the reviews. At that point, this story was around four stars.

But this morning that rating changed to five lovely stars. About eighty-eight percent into the story, when the characters are already into their sixties, I lost my battle against the waterworks. Making this book the first entry into my Best of 2017 shelf.

I know, I know. This story came out in 2012. Way before I discovered MM Romances, but it’s ageless. I’m not a fan of American historicals, but this one worked. I had to admit that I had put this book aside several times because I didn’t want to read anything depressing or angsty, but this story is none any of that. Yes, I’m still a bit teary eye, but it has to do more with happiness. And seeing their lives nearing the end; mortality and all that.

If you’re curious, you can read my review here. And if you want to take the plunge and read a great story, you can find it free on Amazon. The narration is only $1.99 and it’s more than worth it.

[Fridays with Favorites] Great Expectations

When I say Great Expectations, I’m talking about the 1998 movie with Ethan Hawke and Gwyneth Paltrow. I have not read the original Dicken’s novel, but I’m thinking about it. I want to see how far removed the movie is from the original.

A friend I had a brief relationship with recommended this movie to be when we were in college. He always joked that it was our story, but we still good friends.

What I like the most is how Finn discovered his talent and how it relates to his relationships as an adult. Not only with his unrequited love but with his uncle and others around him.

And what all this has to do with writing? Well, I listen to the soundtrack of this movie on repeat when I’m writing. It has a good pace that allows me to get into the rhythm of my stories and Finn is an inspiring character.

[Fridays with Favorites] Canva

fridays

Lately, I have been using Canva to make my graphics. It’s quick, easy, and a free substitute for Photoshop. If you’re looking for a nice addition to a blog post, an attention-grabbing facebook post, or a graphic for your blog tour, Canva is a great solution. They have options you can add and pictures you can buy if you’re looking for something more specific.

It’s not time-consuming which is a plus. Sometimes, the designer in me wants to play around and procrastinate, but the simplicity of their interface makes the whole process a breeze. It’s self-explanatory and you need nothing more than to create an account to start using it. You can upload your own pictures too.

So if you want a new procrastination tool, go check canva.com.

[Fridays with Favorites] Came Upon a Midnight Clear by Katie Porter

wp-1484934443504.jpgThis is not the first time I talk about Came Upon a Midnight Clear. The last time it was back in September 2015. In my post, I mentioned wanting to re-read this book, and I did in December 2016. Make that two times for someone who doesn’t  re-read. I wanted to read it last Christmas for the third time but got other pretties in the way. I did buy a paper copy, though. The only MM printed book I own. I don’t even have any of my stories in print. Sad, I know… lol 🙂

See, as I reader, this book is everything I love. Angst, second changes, beautiful settings, steamy scenes, lovely moments, and many other things. I have read over 1,500 MM romance stories, but this one still my favorite. Yes, there are other I like, but this one is special. In almost four years, it had stayed on top of my list.

And as I writer, that’s what I want to accomplished. To write THAT one book that makes a special read for someone else. It doesn’t have to be a bestseller or have a high rating. I just want the reader to remember my characters and their story. In the end, that’s what writing is about. It’s about giving someone a happy ending to cheer for.

If you want to share your favorite book, it doesn’t have to be MM, go ahead. I love to talk about books.
