[Fridays with Friends] Morticia Knight & Cutting Cords

Today, I’m glad to have Morticia Knight sharing an excerpt from Cutting Cords with us. Also, we are both taking part of the Big Gay Fiction Giveaway. Don’t miss the chance to discover over 70 authors. Enjoy!

Liam yearns for Master Neal’s harsh touch, but Neal fears that a part-time Master can’t give a full-time sub everything he needs.

Liam’s world crumbled after the unexpected death of his Master. Prone to panic attacks and other social anxiety, Liam doesn’t believe he’ll ever find another Master who would be willing to take on such a challenged sub full-time. Too distraught to go back to Club Consequence where he met the man he thought he’d be with forever, he decides to give Kiss of Leather a try.

After doing a piercing gig at Kiss of Leather, Master Neal signs up to become a member. On the night he performs a demo as the final step to being accepted, he meets a sub who brings out his protective urge and makes his heart come alive. Neal isn’t scared off by Liam’s anxiety or social awkwardness. On the contrary, he finds the sub to be refreshingly honest and endearing.

They try out a scene to see if they’ll click, and their connection is everything they’d both hoped it could be. However, the road to love and a Total Power Exchange isn’t an easy one. Neal still hasn’t discovered all there is to know about Liam’s traumatic upbringing, and he’s not sure if he’d ultimately be the right Master for Liam.

Both men are forced to face the truth about love, life and what it means to share it with another person. But before Liam can start over with Neal, he’ll have to cut the cords to his past and trust that Neal will be there to catch him when he does.

Chuck eased himself back into the booth on the opposite end and Neal couldn’t miss his and Jordan’s compassionate expressions as they observed Liam. Damn. Neal rubbed his chest. He’d love to wrap his arms around Liam and hold him close, but something told him he’d have to hold back on touch until he knew more. Talk about unexpected. All he’d hoped for when he’d begun his day was to do well at his demonstration. This might be the bigger prize right here, though.

“I’m ready to order as soon as everyone else is,” Jordan interjected.

“Yeah, let me take a look at this.” Neal picked up the menu again, while Jordan turned to Chuck and asked him about his day. He glanced at Liam, who was doing an excellent impression of a statue. “Liam? Any of these selections grab you?”

Liam briefly twisted his hands together before stilling them. “No thank you, Sir.”

Initially, Liam’s response puzzled him. But he searched his mind to see if he could latch on to what had just passed through Liam’s. “Do you mean that nothing appeals to you because you’re not hungry?”

Liam visibly swallowed. “I’d prefer a soda, please. Uh, please, Sir.”

Hmm. The indirect answer concerned him. He’d file it away for later.

“Okay. A soda it is.” Neal smiled at him. “Hey, would you be cool with dropping club protocol for now? I mean, you’re here as a guest, we just met, and I was thinking we could get to know each other a little before I have to leave.”

“Yes, Sir. That’s cool and I’ll do my best.”

“Of course you will, I can tell.”

Liam peered up tentatively, as if verifying he wouldn’t get in trouble for lifting his gaze. “Really? You think I am?”

“Sure. We have a deal?”

Liam smiled, but quickly covered his mouth. He pressed his lips together before dropping his hand in his lap. “Yes, Sir. A deal. When are you leaving?” Liam lowered his head until his chin practically hit his chest. “I’m sorry. That’s none of my business.”

Neal curled his fingers to keep from reaching out and touching him. “It’s all good. We’re just chatting, right? Ask me whatever you want. Anything.”

Liam looked up, his soft brown eyes so enticing that Neal imagined staring into them, the pupils blown wide with desire as they made love. He adjusted himself on the leather seat.

“Okay.” Liam licked his lips and Neal resisted a groan. “When are you leaving?”

Neal couldn’t help but chuckle. “In about forty-five minutes. I have to fill out my new member paperwork.”

“All right. Do you have any other piercings besides the ones in your face?”

Besides how abrupt it had been, it also wasn’t what he’d expected to hear. At the same time, he preferred Liam’s direct query to the same ol’ pleasantries or other bullshit he typically waded through in the beginning of getting to know a sub. “Yeah. Quite a few. There’s this one that you may not have noticed.” Neal stuck out his tongue to show off the barbell stud inserted in the middle. He grinned at Liam’s reaction. He seemed surprised, but the flush to his cheeks indicated that he was likely imagining what it might feel like working his cock.

“Oh my.” Liam moved closer, leaning in as he studied Neal’s face. He pointed to the ring in his nose. “What’s this one called?”

“It’s a septum piercing. These are snake bites.” Neal touched the small rings adorning each side of his bottom lip. “Eyebrow.” He angled his head so Liam could see his ears closer, “Discs, cartilage, nipples, and I should probably show you the others in a more private setting, although I doubt anyone would mind.” Neal grinned again as he faced Liam.

Which means…? “Are you agreeing to be with me in a more private setting?”

“Yes, Sir. I am.”

“Rad. Aren’t I the lucky one?”

Liam smiled, his lips remaining firmly closed, and Neal reached the conclusion that something about his teeth made Liam self-conscious. Might start with that in our first scene.

The server arrived at that moment and they placed their orders. Neal checked with Liam to find out what he wanted to drink, then conveyed it to the house sub. As they all settled in, the conversation took on a more relaxed vibe, with the exception of Liam, who remained largely silent. He didn’t appear upset, perhaps only nervous. Wish I could see inside that head of his. But he did follow whatever everyone said with clear interest, his demeanor suggesting that he was working extra hard to pay attention.

Right as the plates were being cleared, Neal checked his cell. He hadn’t noticed Gavin come in, but truthfully, his attention had been captured almost exclusively by Liam the entire time. Five of seven. As much as he hated to, he needed to excuse himself. Right as he was about to make his goodbyes, Chuck’s phone went off.

“Sorry, I didn’t put it on vibrate.” He fished it out from beneath the table, and Neal presumed he’d had it in his pocket. “I have to take this, it’s Stone.”

Jordan nodded. “Go on. I’ll be here.”

Neal had no idea who Stone was, but he was obviously someone important. Liam appeared worried. Jordan regarded Liam with a smile.

“I’m sure it’s fine. If he has to go, I can give you a ride back.” Jordan turned to Neal. “That’s Chuck’s boss, and a fine Dom, I might add.” Jordan winked.

Liam squirmed in his seat. “Okay.”

Liam seemed tense once more and Neal tried to figure out what the issue could be. He knows I’m leaving soon. Master Jordan is familiar to him, so I don’t think that should be a problem… Is it?

He couldn’t stand seeing Liam worried. “Liam? Were you hoping to stay longer?”

Liam gazed up at him and Neal could swear it was with admiration. “You said you had to leave soon anyway.”

Neal had already determined that he’d work with Liam on answering questions directly. “Just to finish up the paperwork, then I’m free.” Neal plucked at his goatee. “I have an idea. If you’re interested, we could go grab some coffee and dessert after I’m finished. I’d love to take you up on your offer to scene with me, but I’m too wrecked. Then I could give you a ride home afterward. How does that sound?”

“I like coffee.”

“Right on. Then it’s a date?”

“Yes, Sir. It’s a date.” Liam gave him another close-mouthed smile. His expression fell and he abruptly glanced in Jordan’s direction. “I… Where will you be?”

“I’ll be right here until Master Neal is finished. I won’t leave you alone.”

“I’m being a problem, aren’t I?”

Jordan shook his head. “No, Liam. You’re not. If Chuck needs to leave, I wouldn’t mind waiting for Gavin to be through so I can chill with him. If Chuck stays, he can hang out with us. It’s all good.”

Liam sighed, his relief obvious. “Thank you.”

Readers & Writers for LGBT Chechens: Guest Post by Megan Derr #chechenrainbow

Today’s Fridays with Friends has an all-encompassing significance. As readers and writers, we have the opportunity to make a difference in the current situation of LGBT Chechens. Please take a moment to read Megan Derr’s guest post below and to visit the rest of the links included. Most importantly, join the cause, every bit counts. Sharing this post and the information about the charity auction is the first step. Help us reach as many people as possible. This is a subject that needs our immediate attention. Thank you!

You may have heard the news coming out of Chechnya, part of the Russian Federation, where police are kidnapping gay men (and those they perceive to be gay) and taking them to camps for torture and state-sanctioned murder.

Readers & Writers for LGBT Chechens is raising money for organizations working directly with gay men and other persecuted LGBT people in Chechnya and the northern Caucasus, through:

Words Make a Difference
by Megan Derr

Several years ago, my wife, my sister and I decided to start Less Than Three Press so that voices that went unheard might get a chance to tell their stories. Many women in queer romance come here because it’s a home they don’t find elsewhere. Many men come for the same reason, because so much of literature and general fiction is full of depressing stories where it only counts as a real book if at least one of the queer characters dies.

But the queer community reaches far beyond the books we write. Once upon a time I did an auction similar to this to fight for marriage equality. I am now happily married to my wife. What we do matters, from the shortest, silliest story we write to the most inflammatory post we reblog (or, in my case, write). Words matter, and they matter more when people try to pretend they were never spoken, that the people who said them, are trying to say them, don’t exist.

So it might feel small to contribute a story, or to buy a story, but hundreds of emails from happy readers who feel seen and acknowledged will tell you otherwise. The wedding ring on my finger says my small part years ago helped to make a difference. The Readers & Writers for LGBT Chechens auction too will make a difference to people who might not have been heard otherwise. That’s why I write, publish, and participate in things like this. It’s not the huge grand gestures that most often save a world, it’s the small ones.

Megan Derr (Twitter: @meganaderr) is a long time resident of LGBTQ romance, and keeps herself busy reading, writing, and publishing it. She is often accused of fluff and nonsense. When she’s not involved in writing, she likes to cook, harass her cats, or watch movies. She loves to hear from readers, and can be found all over the internet.
To raise money to help LGBT Chechens, she will write an original novella for the prompt of the highest bidder in the Readers & Writers for LGBT Chechens online auction.

[Fridays with Friends] Amy Aislin & The Play of His Life

I’m happy to have Amy Aislin with us today talking about her debut novella, The Play of His Life. She also shares interesting facts about the story’s settings and an excerpt. Enjoy!

Teaser #4 - April182017-smallsizeSettings and Surroundings

First off, a huge thank you to Lila for hosting me on her blog today!

My debut novella, The Play of His Life, was released on April 28 from MLR Press. It’s a second chance love story between Christian and Riley, two former best friends-turned-lovers-turned exes who haven’t spoken in six years.

The Play of His Life is set around the Christmas holidays in my hometown of Oakville, Ontario, Canada. I chose this location because even though it doesn’t have the expansive history of old European cities or the frenetic energy of a bustling city or the wonder of a vast country landscape, it’s still one of my favourite places in the world and Christmas in Oakville is spectacular.

The Town of Oakville, as it’s known, is a suburb of Toronto located about 30 minutes west of the city, with a population of about 200,000. (The welcome sign says 183,000 but I don’t believe that for a second. Wikipedia says 193,832, which is much more likely.) It’s charming and friendly and beautiful, right on the shores of Lake Ontario.

Almost every location mentioned in The Play of His Life is real: Christian and Riley’s neighbourhood, Lakeshore Road, Lakeside Park, Glen Eden, Milton, the Annex in Toronto. There are only two locations (if I remember correctly) that are complete figments of my imagination: Warm Glow, the bakery former NHL player Riley now owns, and the frozen pond in the middle of Christian and Riley’s neighbourhood. Both play important roles in the story.

Oakville plays an important role in the story as well. It’s the place both Christian and Riley consider home. It’s the place I consider home. I guess you could say that Oakville takes on the qualities of a separate character in the story. At least, I hope that’s the sense you get!

If you’re ever playing tourist in Toronto, might I suggest a little detour to Oakville?

ThePlayofHisLife_Amy Aislin

Former best friends turned lovers Christian and Riley haven’t seen or spoken to each other in six years…is there a better time than the holiday season to reconnect with your favorite person?

The last person Christian wants to run into on a visit home to spend time with his mom over the holidays is his former best friend-turned-lover-turned-ex. But there Riley is, in all his tall, chiseled, blondness. The same guy who walked out on him six years ago, breaking his heart in the process. Who knew he’s still in love with the jerk? (Oh yeah, he did. What? Who says denial isn’t healthy?)

Two years ago, Riley was injured out of the NHL, but he’s got his own bakery now and a quiet life selling quiches and cupcakes to his customers. Then Christian unexpectedly walks back into his life, forcing Riley to question his choices. Especially that one choice he made six years ago that walked him out of Christian’s life. Now if only he had the courage to tell a boy how he really feels about him…

Chapter 3

In the middle of their neighborhood, about halfway between their houses, was a small pond that froze over every winter. Riley was already there when Christian arrived at three o’clock on Christmas Eve, lugging his very, very old hockey gear and a tiny dog.

“Trevor!” The dog took off at Riley’s greeting, making a beeline for him. Already wearing his gear, Riley couldn’t crouch to greet the little shih tzu, so he bent at the waist and gave the dog a pat on the head.

Christian stopped at the edge of the pond and admired the way Riley’s jeans molded to his deliciously tight ass. Riley may not play in the pros anymore, but he still had an incredible goalie butt.

“I see you two know each other,” Christian said, mildly offended at the dog’s abandonment. Trevor clearly preferred Riley over Christian.

“Your mom brings him into the shop all the time.”

Christian grimaced. “You still see my mom?” Riley had mentioned something of the sort the other day, too.

“All the time. I see her more than I see you.”

Riley stiffened for a second as he seemed to realize what he’d said. Christian stood looking at him, unimpressed. Because really, who was it that ran out after they’d hooked up the last time, after his dad’s funeral?

Riley gave him a tight smile that said something like, Yeah, well, the phone works both ways, dude.

They’d have to talk about it sometime, but today wasn’t that day.

“You gonna stand there all day,” Riley joked, “or are we gonna play?”

The twinkle in his eyes told Christian that yes, Riley was aware of the double entendre he’d just uttered.

Oh, they were going to play, all right.

They didn’t bother with skates; the frozen pond was too bumpy for it to be safe. But Riley had brought his old hockey net, so at least they had a real goal.

Christian put on his gear — it was a bit of a tight fit, but it’d do — grabbed his hockey stick and a puck and moved to center ice.

“Trevor,” Christian said, and pointed with his stick. Trevor moved off the ice to nose at some dead plants poking through the snow against a fence.

“Think you’ll finally get one past me?” Riley asked, pulling on his mask. Christian would not call that smirk sexy.

“Finally? You must be forgetting all the previous times I scored on you.”

Now there he went with the double entendres.

“Ha! If by ‘all’ you mean ‘never.’ Bring it, Dufresne. Bet you can’t get one past me.”

“Bet? Okay.” Christian nodded once decisively. “If I get one past you I get to try a shot of Shimmer.”

Riley shrugged, all casual-like. “Fine.”

“And if I don’t get one past you?”

Christian could see Riley contemplating his answer, and even through the cage of Riley’s goalie mask Christian could tell Riley’s ocean eyes were on him, assessing. They swept Christian up and down. Christian could almost feel the heat in his gaze like a physical touch. He obviously had been wrong a few days ago…Riley was just as affected by him as he was by Riley. The heat shimmering between them, even from ten feet apart…. Like he could reach out and grab it. He was sure Riley was going to bet him a blowjob or something and his cock started to stiffen in his jeans.

“I want to know the reason you haven’t moved back here,” Riley said.

Instant boner-killer. No way was he telling Riley shit. Meant he’d have to work his ass off to get the puck past him. Riley hadn’t played pro in two years. He was probably out of practice, right?

Wrong. The fucker stopped all twenty-six shots — yes, Christian counted — with seeming ease.

Amy Aislin started writing on a rainy day in fourth grade when her class was forced to stay inside for recess. [Fridays with Friends] Isobel Starling & Aural Sex- The Joy of Audiobooks

Today we have Isobel Starling talking about audiobooks and her upcoming audio release of As You Wish narrated by Gary Furlong. Enjoy!

AYW Audio coming soon

Aural Sex – The Joy of Audiobooks

I am a huge fan of audiobooks.

There is something so delightfully intimate about letting a narrator into my head and allowing him to speak to me.  Because that is what it feels like, he is speaking only to me.  I get a kind of womb-like comfort from curling up, plugging in my ipod and having a story read to me.  And what makes the experience even better is when the narrator is vocally talented and has theatrical training.  You can tell when a narrator has this kind of training because he won’t just ‘read’ the book out loud, he’ll ‘perform’ the story, providing each character with a unique voice and in turn, giving the book a whole a new layer.

My first foray into audiobooks began with Terry Pratchett’s Fantasy comedy ‘Discworld’ books, which I used as my bedtime stories for years until I exhausted the series.  Then, I moved on to epic fantasy and thrillers.  With so many audiobooks to catch up on it took me a long time to try an M/M romance audiobook.  Admittedly, I thought that listening to a man I did not know talk dirty to me in the darkness was a bit… icky!  I know that anyone who’s read my work, and more importantly, my sex scenes will laugh out loud at my prudishness, but the thought of listening to sex did make me feel uncomfortable.

However, I am pleased to admit that I moved out of my comfort zone and I was SO wrong.  I began listening to Jordan Castillo Price’s Psycop series, narrated by the amazing Gomez Pugh, and my mind changed forever.  Gomez sounded like sex on a stick!  His voices for Wild Bill and Michael from Jordan’s “Channelling Morpheus” Contemporary Vamp serial are etched on my mind forever.

I have since become an avid listener of M/M audiobooks and have worked my way through Josh Lanyon, Z.A. Maxfield, Rhys Ford, and many other authors.  There are hits and misses, primarily due to the choice of narrator – a bad narrator can kill a book stone dead, but when I find a good narrator I tend to stick with them!

Finding a narrator for my own M/M Romance series was a hard task.  I had very specific needs – primarily, the narrator had to be able to perform a range of Scots accents to bring MC Declan Ramsay to life, as well as his brother, mother and other Scots friends.  It was a very challenging task for a narrator.

I posted the narration gig on ACX – Audible’s audiobook creation site, and was inundated with auditions.  There were many very talented, well-known narrators amongst the bunch, but most of them were American, and I found their Scots accents just did not work for me.  Eventually, after an arduous search, I found native Irish voice actor Gary Furlong who did a super audition, displaying his range of Scots and English accents.  He has a lovely smooth, extremely listenable voice and so I snapped him up for the series.

“As You Wish” Book #1 in my “Shatterproof Bond” series is due to be released on in May 2017.  I proofed the production and am absolutely delighted with Gary’s performance – especially his take on Declan, who comes across as broody, masculine and at the right moments, has an edge of sensual vulnerability.  I know my American readers in particular, who fell in love with Declan will go googly-eyed for him all over again.  Therefore, book #2 “Illuminate the Shadows” is now in production and will hopefully come out soon after my first audio release, with book #3 “Return to Zero” hot on their heels.
