It’s Done!

2017 #ROW80 Round 1: Check-In #22

The first round of #Row80 for 2017 is done. Now it’s time to see how productive I was. For starters, I’m writing this post at ten pm. Technically, I’m early because the round doesn’t end until tomorrow, but I want to keep my post on its regular Wednesday schedule. As I mentioned in my last update, the next round would be hosted at Hunter Hues. So if you don’t want to miss it, you can sign up for the email updates here.

Today, I finished the edits for Binding Jax’s Heart, drafted the synopsis, and wrote the query letter. To learn more about that, you need to sign up for my updates under Leigh Hunter. I’m hoping to submit everything by the end of the month.

Branding & the Rounds to Come

2017 #ROW80 Round 1: Check-In #21| 10 Minute Novelist: Update #11

During the last week, I have seen several authors in my genre asking for tips and tricks about marketing, branding, and website design. As I mentioned before, I come from a design and business administration background. Therefore, not getting caught in all the bells and whistles is hard.

On my last update, I mentioned my secondary pen name–Leigh Hunter–and my plans for the near future. All of them are part of the brand I’m trying to establish. It might sound counterproductive since I should be using all my time to write more stories, but I can have the best book ever and without a way to get it out to people it would fail.

I’m not doing anything drastic or changing more than I could fix on my own, but during the time off from #Row80, I’d be working on fixing my websites (yes, I have more than one, or two) and consolidating my social media outlets. At the same time, I’d be plotting and outlining my CampNaNo novel and finishing the last of my book reviews (I’m taking a hiatus until Fall).

One thing that would change for the next round would be the website in which I post this updates. I realized that mostly everything I talk about on Wednesdays & Sundays is gear toward other authors and not readers. And with that in mind, I’d be moving my future updates to one of my other websites, Hunter Hues.

See you all next Wednesday to check which goals I accomplished during the last eighty days.

Alter Egos & #Row80

2017 #ROW80 Round 1: Check-In #20

We only have one more week to go in this round. I’m still trying to decide if I want to be part of the next round or take a break for a while. This is my fifth consecutive round and I don’t want to start repeating the same topics or get people bore with the update posts. Maybe I’d play around and find a way to make them a bit more interesting and less of a chore for all of you to read.

As for today, I sent my monthly newsletter for this pen name. You can find it here if you are curious. But I also created a signup under my MF pen name, Leigh Hunter, since the novella I’m working on would be re-submitted under that name. You can join Leigh’s Journeys here. I still need to create a Facebook page, though.

Kids & Beat Sheets

2017 #ROW80 Round 1: Check-In #19| 10 Minute Novelist: Update #10

I spent most of my time this week editing. I only have fifty percent left on the last set of edits pending, and I’m hoping to finish that tomorrow. I had it scheduled for the weekend but decided to spend the time with my kids instead. I really liked the new Trolls movie. I was a fan way back then, and love the new version.

They are off for Spring Break, so I’m planning to wake up early and do some writing or editing before they go out of their rooms. At least the older ones would keep the younger ones entertain for a while.

Also, I might give beat sheets a try. Two authors recommend the method, and I do need something to take me out of this stagnation. I have seen several online, but I think I’m going to buy Romancing the Beat by Gwen Hayes. Plus, there’s a Scrivener template and a PDF to follow along.

Since I’m planning to add more than romance to my next set of stories, I’d be adding other beat sheets to work the rest of the plots. But, I haven’t decided on a specific one yet. I’m still looking for something that would work with speculative fiction, mystery, etc.

As you see, I still in the planning stages. And with any luck, new words might be flowing around by the following week. Plus, I’d be re-working my writing schedule, again.

Accomplishments for week #10:

  • Read: 7 books
  • Reviewed: 4 book
  • Written: Weekly update for A Demon’s Duty to the Devil’s Son & Cavalry
  • Planned: Tried to do some outlining, but failed
  • Edited: Fifty percent done with the last set of edits
  • Promo: NA
  • Extras: many emails, posts, and many other words

Outlines and New Stories

2017 #ROW80 Round 1: Check-In #17 | 10 Minute Novelist: Update #9

Knowing the next story I want to write doesn’t mean it’s easy to start writing it. Getting start it has always been the most difficult part for me. Perhaps because I have to gather my ideas in a way that makes sense before I can start working on a basic outline. Sometimes I only have one or two characters I want to work on and it takes some time to find a plot that fits or vice-versa.

One thing I do between stories is to read about the craft of writing. Anything from articles, to books, and anything in-between. I still don’t have a favorite way to outline or set up a story. My process changes depending on what I’m working on and if I have a deadline. This time around I found some articles worth sharing. I might give them a try and see if they make a difference.
